The invasion plan was drawn in marker on the back of a cereal box, and by ten o'clock the robot had eaten the corner with the map on it. Zim stood on the kitchen table, arms folded, glaring at the gap where Earth used to be. GIR said the gap was delicious and asked whether the plan could be eaten too.

The pig did not help. Minimoose had floated out through the back window at dawn and now hung above the cul-de-sac, pink and smug, its little wings flapping in the wrong direction. Mrs Fenwick from number nine waved at it with a tea towel. Zim wrote MOOSE IS A SPY on the fridge door, crossed out the spelling, then crossed out the whole thing, because the fridge was the only reliable archive he owned.

By afternoon the clouds had come down low over the estate, soft and grey and dotted with orange shapes that the robot insisted were stolen nuggets. Zim tried to conquer them. He charged, he shouted, he fell through a hedge. The pig drifted down at last and landed on his chest, delighted, and the robot climbed up beside them with a bag of crumbs.

Zim lay on the lawn for a long time, looking up. Nothing had been conquered. The pig was warm, the clouds were nuggets, and the cereal box was in the bin, which he decided, after some thought, counted as a victory.
