Cartoon mice, glass slipper and pumpkin on thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows two cartoon mice in the foreground, one in an orange robe and one in a green top, with a glass slipper, a large orange pumpkin and a clock tower behind them. A bluebird flies at the top right, and the scene is framed by a purple wash and green vine-like curls. Bold dark outlines and smooth shading give the characters a rounded, cartoon finish, and the bright colours dominate the composition.

Dear Bramble, the clock in the tower above Harrowby Cross stopped again on Tuesday at half past eleven, and Mr Pickering the verger is blaming the mice. We are not to blame. It was Hollis the bluebird, who went up to roost on the hour hand and sulked when we shooed him. You know how he has been since the wedding business.

The slipper is still on the Corn Exchange step where it was dropped at the Harvest Ball, all glassy and blue in the lamplight, and nobody in town will touch it because everyone says it belongs to one particular person. Ottoline has her eye on it. She says a sewing mouse ought to have the making of something that fine, and she has been measuring it with a bit of thread every morning before the milk van comes.

Last night I caught her behind the vicarage with a lantern and a notebook, counting pumpkin seeds. She wants to grow a coach-sized pumpkin on the allotments for next autumn, and I told her the committee would sooner see a marrow. She said a marrow never turned into anything but soup. Then she laughed and fell backwards into the cabbages, and the green vine curls from the hedge wound round her ankles as if they meant to keep her.

The clock is still stopped. Pickering has sent for a man from Ashford who charges by the hour, which is a poor joke with a clock. Ottoline says we should mend the slipper, wind the tower ourselves and see what time it turns out to be. I have a feeling it will be time to go home, and that the owner of that shoe will come back for it, and we shall be the ones asked to try it on. Write soon, and mind the cat at number nine. Your loving cousin, Gus.
