Alice in Wonderland keyhole on a thigh

Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon Alice with long blonde hair and a blue dress looks through a round, stained-glass style opening that extends down the thigh into a keyhole shape. Inside the keyhole are a Drink Me bottle, a teapot, a playing card and a small cup, all outlined in bold black lines with vivid reds, blues, yellows and purples. The composition wraps around the leg and the image is shown in good focus against a dark background.

Mr Pellow sent me up the scaffold on the Tuesday with a crate of spare glass and a warning not to lean on the tracery. Frost had lifted the lead on the south transept window, and the Dean wanted it whole by Easter. I was fourteen and thought I knew the difference between crimson and red. Pellow said I would learn it by Good Friday or not at all.

The panel was the odd one. Someone in the last century had set a keyhole-shaped light into the wall below the rose, a round roundel of ruby and cobalt that narrowed into a slot of bright yellow glass. Pellow called it the Looking Glass and would not let anyone touch it. On the third afternoon my knife slipped and a leaded corner came away, and behind it I found a little hinged pane no bigger than a playing card. Inside lay a stoppered blue bottle with a paper label reading DRINK ME, a china teapot with a chipped spout, and a card painted with a single red heart.

I did not tell Pellow. I wrapped the card in my handkerchief and took it home, and that night I held it to the lamp and saw, very faintly through the glass, a girl with yellow hair and a blue sash, one hand raised as if to stop a door from closing. She was the same girl as the window. Her face had been painted over so many times the enamel had gone soft.

On Good Friday the Dean came up the ladder himself and admired the new leading. He never asked about the little pane, and I never offered. I set the blue bottle back where it had been, slid the hinge shut, and the light came through the keyhole exactly as it had for a hundred years, ruby and cobalt falling across the flagstones like something left out for a guest.
