Just past three, the children's ward on Kestrel wing had gone quiet enough that Hanna could hear the fridge in the parents' kitchen humming through two sets of doors. Vincent, the night porter, sat on an upturned bucket beside the lifts with a mop handle across his knees, the way other men held a pint. A postcard of a blue-faced monkey was pinned above the staff kettle, cross-legged in a web of thin black lines, and he had been talking about it for months. 'He's not sitting,' Vincent said. 'He's holding the whole thing still so the rest of it can turn.' Hanna didn't believe him, but she liked the sound of it.

At four the lift doors opened on a boy of nine dragging a drip stand, wanting to know whether the orange on the floor was paint or blood. Hanna said paint. Vincent set the mop handle against the wall, crouched in front of the boy, and pointed at the edge of the splash where it had already started to dry. He said some colours are made to run before they settle.

When the boy was back in bed, Hanna mopped up what she could, but the stain stayed in the grain of the floor, orange at the edges and paler in the middle, and she decided to leave it there.
