Cheshire Cat face on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A close view of a cat face tattoo with large green eyes, a dark nose and a wide grin filled with small teeth. The bold black outline is softened by shading around the eyes and muzzle, with a pinkish tone on the skin beneath. The design is centred on the forearm and fills most of the frame.

Nobody on Skerrow would admit to seeing the cat first, but everyone knew the grin came before the weather. My uncle Alec swore it hung in the back of the ferry shed one November, two green lamps for eyes and a mouth stretched wider than the door, and by Thursday the boats were lashed down and the Atlantic had taken half the pier.

I was nineteen and thought I was too clever for it. I took the ferry ledger, a tin of tar and a borrowed torch, and went looking for the thing myself. The shed smelled of diesel and wet rope. Up in the rafters, where the rain came through the slates, someone had scratched a smile into the tar on the beam, teeth in a neat row, and a pair of eyes that caught my torchlight and held it.

I climbed the ladder to see what it was made of. My hand found only cold paint and a gull's feather pressed flat. When I looked down, the shed door had swung shut behind me, and the grin seemed to be waiting for an answer I hadn't yet worked out. I said, aloud, that I'd come about the timetable. The grin widened. Then the wind hit the slates, and I heard Alec below, shouting for me to come down before the tide turned.

We got the last boat off at dusk. Years later, when the new harbour master asked why the old shed stood empty, I told him it was kept for the cat. He laughed, but he never went up the ladder, and I never told him the eyes were still there in the tar, bright green, watching the sea for whatever it meant to bring next.
