Cartoon owl on a log on the ankle

Ankle · Black and grey · Photo

A cartoon owl with large round eyes sits on a shaded log, with curled swirl details on its body and on the branch beneath it. The linework is bold and dark, and the feathers and log are softened with grey shading. The design is shown in close view on a lower leg, with the ankle at the bottom edge of the frame.

You had the windlass in one hand and a bacon sandwich in the other when the owl came down onto the drifting log, round-eyed and deeply put out, as though the Marigold had been moored in his wood without asking. Bramble, the boat's ginger cat, stopped licking her paw to supervise. The river was slow that morning, the surface lacing itself into small brown swirls around the bow, and the log was the sort of thing you'd hook out of the weeds and drag aboard for kindling. Except the log had wedged itself against the stern rail, the owl had settled on the log, and neither of them seemed inclined to move.

You tried reason. You explained that the lock at Hatton was sixteen hours of hard labour and the ducks would take the crusts if he wouldn't. He blinked at you slowly, the way the lock-keeper did when you asked for a day's grace on the fees, and he fluffed the feathers on his chest into a neat pattern of curls. Bramble gave a long sigh and went below.

By afternoon you had made your peace with him. You let him ride. He took a corner of the sandwich off the rail and you pretended not to mind. When the cut narrowed under Coldharbour bridge he lifted off without a word, and the log, which you were sure had been wedged fast, rolled gently after him into the reeds and turned slowly downstream like a dropped pencil.

The next morning it was back on the stern, tied with a bowline you had never learned to tie, and beside it lay a single brown feather, curled tight as a watch spring.
