Cartoon owl on an upper arm

Neo-trad · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A stylised owl faces forward with large round eyes, a hooked orange beak and feather tufts, drawn in bold black linework. The body is left mostly unshaded, with orange and purple lines and soft orange accents on the wings and tail. The owl sits centred on the skin, with its wing and tail feathers sweeping down the length of the arm.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the time you reach the galley at four bells, the owl has already found the tin of ship's biscuits and is sitting on it like a magistrate. Nobody aboard the Mirabel knows where he came from. He arrived in the forward hold among a crate of Seville oranges, and he has been working his way through the crew's patience ever since, one rasher at a time.

You tell him what you tell the bosun: a bird who steals is a bird who gets put ashore at the next port. He turns his head all the way round, the way owls do, and gives you the look of a man who has heard that threat in three harbours already. Then he drops a strip of bacon off the rail into the grey water, very deliberately, and waits for you to notice that he is feeding the gulls out of spite.

The trouble comes with the paring knife. Mr Ostrander swears the owl swallowed his best blade whole, and the boy from Cork saw him perched on the mizzen with something shiny under one foot like a prize. You climb the ratlines at dusk with a bowl of scraps and a bad temper. The owl is waiting at the top, feathers fluffed against the wind, and he ignores the scraps entirely. He pulls the knife out from under his wing, lays it on the yard between you, and looks at you with one eye half closed.

You understand then that he wants what you want: one quiet hour where nobody is shouting about the stores. You leave the knife where it is and the scraps too. By morning the bowl is empty, the knife is back in the galley drawer, and the owl is asleep on the spice rack with one orange-tipped feather tucked over his beak, as though the whole matter had never been his idea.
