The plums came off the trees all at once this year, the way they do when the wasps have been at them for a week and nobody has the heart to pick. I thought the moths had got it. Instead it was wrapped in a page of the Kent Messenger and smelled of camphor. I have put it on the windowsill facing the orchard, where the sun comes up behind the Bramleys and turns the whole row the colour of marmalade.

Mr Dorrell came round asking after you. He says the lease on the top field is up and he wants a dozen new cherry trees in there. I told him that field has never needed anything from anybody, and he can plant his cherries somewhere the sun isn't so bossy.

Come home for the harvest if you can. Bring the boy. The walnut leaves are already going yellow at the edges, and the red berries on the hedge by the gate are ripe enough to eat, though the birds have had the best of them.
