Two otters holding hands
Fine line · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
Two cartoon otters stand side by side, one holding the other's hand, drawn in a single continuous black outline. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the otters have simple dot eyes, noses and paw details. The design sits centrally on bare skin, with the lighter background of a pale surface visible at the edge of the frame.

The river under the old bridge at Haxby had frozen only once in living memory, and that was the winter the two otters came up out of the culvert holding paws. Nobody in the lock-keeper's cottage believed it until Mary Cottrell walked down at dawn with a lantern and saw them sitting on the ice rail, one with its head tilted, the other with its hand stretched out toward the water as if asking the cold to behave.

They came every night after that. The lamplighter swore they walked the wall like people do, one leading, one following, and that they never once let go of each other to cross the gap by the mill. Children left fish heads on the step, which the otters ignored, preferring the bread crusts from the baker on Ferrars Row, who said they paid for them in river stones, smooth and grey, each one warm from being held.
In March the thaw came early and the water rose brown over the weir. Mary went down to the bridge expecting to find nothing but mud. Instead there was one otter on the bank, pacing the same three yards of stone, its paw held out over the edge where the other had slipped in.
She did not know how long she stood there. When the water finally dropped, the wall was dry, and on the flat stone at its end lay a single grey pebble, warm to the touch, with a small crack across it like a line of ink.
