Cartoon owl with cupcake and caterpillar
Other · Colour · Photo
A rounded cartoon owl with closed eyes and a small beak sits at the centre, with a blue wing on one side and three grey tufts on its belly. A cupcake with a cherry, a green caterpillar and a small pink heart with a dark burst surround it on the skin. The bold outlines and flat, soft colour fills give it a playful, illustrative look, and the motifs are spaced loosely across the area.

Mrs Hollis had kept the night hatch at the Ashby footbridge for thirty-one years, and in all that time nobody had asked her to stamp a caterpillar through. Tonight it sat on the ledge in its green coat, a paper ticket pinned to its back, and it would not move until she read the ticket.

Barnaby, the owl who roosted in the rafters above the customs lamp, had opinions about everything. He kept his eyes shut against the glare, which he claimed was how owls showed respect at a checkpoint. "The cupcake's papers are in order," he said. "It has a cherry, which is a declared fruit." Hollis ran a finger down the ledger. The cupcake, a squat little thing with pink frosting, had crossed at dusk without a word, and nobody had thought to ask where it was bound.
The ticket said the caterpillar was carrying one small heart across the water, wrapped in a bit of the night's last firework smoke, the dark burst that hung over the reeds every August when the village forgot to light anything. Hollis had seen that heart before. It had come over in the lining of her own coat the winter her husband went to sea, and she had never quite declared it to anyone.
She stamped the ticket and lifted the gate. The caterpillar inched down the far bank toward the cupcake, which had waited all evening with its cherry bobbing like a lantern. Barnaby opened one eye. "Ledger says nothing about hearts," he said. "Hearts never need declaring," said Hollis, and she pulled the hatch shut on the cold.
