Cartoon pair riding a bicycle past the moon

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

Two cartoon characters in hooded tops ride a mint green bicycle across a pale, cratered moon. The figures and bicycle have bold black outlines with flat, solid fills, and the moon is shaded with soft yellow and peach tones. A thick black border frames the scene in a rounded circle against the leg, which sits in the centre of the photo.

Carl had told Gary the basket was a bad idea. Gary said a basket was the only reason anyone would let them on the bus with the bike, and that was the end of it. So at half eleven on a Thursday they were wheeling a mint green bike with a rust-scabbed chain down Cutler Lane, Gary's hood up though it was thirty degrees.

The plan, such as it was, was to reach the top of the hill by the water tower before the sun went down, because Gary had read online that the moon came up over the reservoir and you could see the crater where the old pram factory used to be. Carl didn't believe it. Carl believed the moon was a big dirty lamp somebody had forgotten to switch off. But Gary pedalled, Carl sat in the basket with his knees up round his ears, and the wheels hissed on the tarmac.

They reached the top just as the moon came up, pale and lumpy and pockmarked like a crumpet. Gary stopped. Carl climbed out, grumbling, and for a while neither of them spoke. A dog barked somewhere below. "Told you," Gary said. "Told you what?" "It's bigger than the telly." Carl looked at it, and it looked back, and he realised he had been sitting in a wicker basket for four miles to see it.

On the way down Carl steered with his feet up on the handlebars and Gary shouted at him to stop showing off. The moon followed them the whole way, patient as a bailiff, and for once Carl didn't tell him to shut up.
