Cartoon couple in heart frame on thigh

Traditional · Thigh · Colour · Photo

A cartoon man with a moustache and a woman with glasses embrace inside a gold-edged heart frame, with a burger shown between them. Red roses and green leaves fill the space around the heart, and a yellow-orange flower sits at the top. Bold black outlines and flat fills give it a traditional look, with bright colour ink dominating the design, photographed on a thigh against a black and white checkered floor.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Dear Ivy, you will never guess what happened at the Coldharbour Mop. The generator on the Cosy Corner van gave out at ten past eight with a queue of forty lads from the scaffolding firm, and Ray Potts stood in the middle of the field swearing at it as if it had insulted his mother.

Winnie didn't panic. She took the paraffin lamp off its hook, fetched the good spatula from under the counter and told Ray to stop being a martyr. They cooked on the camping stove for two hours. Every time a burger came off the griddle she shouted the order across the field, and every time Ray flipped one he tipped his cap at her as if he were seventeen again.

Near midnight the fair lights went off, the whole row of them, and the field went dark except for our two lamps. Winnie sat on an upturned crate and wiped the grease off her glasses with her apron. Ray sat down beside her, said nothing, and held out the last bun. She laughed so hard she had to rest her head on his shoulder, and he let her.

I've decided I'm going to ask Winnie to paint me a rose on the side of my caravan, since she's the only one who does them properly. Tell Mum I'm not coming home for Christmas. I'm staying put with the helter-skelter lads for the winter. Love, Maud.
