Cartoon pirate captain with hook on a limb
Other · Colour · Photo
A cartoon pirate captain with a dark moustache, a grimacing grin and a purple hat with a feathered brim fills the centre of the tattoo, holding a silver hook. The linework is bold and the shading is smooth, with warm orange and yellow glows behind the figure. Vivid purple, green and orange ink dominate, and the two photos show the same piece from slightly different angles.

The hook had lived in the props cupboard at Saltmarsh Primary for thirty-one years, wrapped in a dinner tray lid and an old pillowcase, and nobody had thought to ask for it back. So when the school closed and the reunion was held in the back room of the Ferryman instead, Maureen Pask carried it in under her coat like a loaf of bread.

Everyone agreed the captain had been the best part of the play. He wore a purple hat with a feathered brim big enough to shade two small children, a moustache drawn on with burnt cork, and a grin so wide the back row could see his teeth were only painted on. He stalked the stage with his silver hook held high and shouted at the crocodile until the crocodile, which was really Gary Ludd in a bedsheet, had to be carried off laughing.
The trouble was that the captain had been promised to Tobias Crane, and Tobias had broken his wrist falling off the climbing frame the Monday before the show. Mrs Hebden stood in the wings with the hat in her hands and looked round the hall for a volunteer. Ivy Marrow, who was nine and had never once been picked for anything, put her hand up before she could stop it.
Now Ivy was forty-four and ran the bakery on Quay Street. She took the hook from Maureen without a word, held it up to the lamp, and gave the old grin. The back room went quiet, then someone at the bar started the song from the end of that play, and by the second line the whole room was roaring the crocodile's part, the way it always had.
