Nobody had asked the dragon to come to the seaside, but it arrived on the Tuesday ferry all the same, folded into a carpet bag with its wings poking out of the top like washing on a line. Pim the hatter took one look at it, sat down on an upturned crate outside the tea rooms and said he had been expecting it since Easter.

The trouble started with the clown. Tobias Lark had been the pier's red-nosed attraction for thirty summers, and his ruff collar was the only one left in Kent that still stood up straight. When the dragon sneezed on it, the starch caught and the whole collar went up like a sunrise. Lark stood in the middle of the boards with his eyebrows singed off and bellowed for someone to fetch a bucket of tea.
Pim poured the tea himself. It was the good stuff, the bergamot blend he kept for weddings, and he tipped a cup into the carpet bag. The dragon went quiet. Then it hiccupped a puff of violet smoke, shrank to the size of a kipper and climbed into the green top hat on his head as neatly as a cat into a basket.
By evening the pier lamps were lit and the hat was still warm. Lark came round with a jug of custard and a sheepish grin, and Pim let him sit. Nobody ever settled who owned the dragon. It sneezes a little each time someone says the word Tuesday, and that, the locals agree, is more than enough to keep the pier honest.
