Cartoon rabbits in red-brown ink on upper arm
Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon rabbit sits in the centre of the arm, with smaller rabbits and a round, patterned creature arranged around it. The linework is bold and solid, with simple flat fills and no visible shading. The design is in one reddish-brown ink, and the arm rests on a dark padded tattoo chair against a grey floor.

The shutter on the chip shop on Oldham Road had been painted over so many times that the rabbits had almost disappeared, and it was my job to bring them back. I had a tin of red-brown ink, a fine brush and a ladder that wobbled whenever a bus went past. It was twenty to two in the morning, and the big rabbit was already cross with me.

He had been sitting on the kerb since midnight, ears folded back, drumming his heel against a bollard. The two small ones kept wandering off to sniff the bins, and the round, patterned creature, with a shell like a crumpet and the face of a man who had paid for a ticket, just watched the traffic lights change as if they owed him money. "You said one hour," the big rabbit told me. "It's been three."
I drew him exactly as he was, hunched over his knees with his nose wrinkled, then the smaller ones, each glowering up from the bottom of the metal. The paint dried fast in the cold. By four the shutter looked like a page from a child's comic left out in the rain, and a police car slowed at the corner to look at it, then drove on.
When I climbed down, the big rabbit had come to stand beside me. He peered at the picture, then at the locked door, then at me. "Still shut," he said. I offered him the paper bag of chips I'd bought for my tea. He took one, considered it, and passed the rest to the others without looking round, which was the nicest thing anyone had done for me all week.
