"She knows her job," she told the mate, clamping the lid down with a folded tea towel. Forty men on the Marigold Rose lived on her tea, four hours at a time, and she was the only thing aboard that never sulked when the deck rolled.

Skipper Dunn wanted the coal kept for the winch, and he said so every morning. But that afternoon, forty miles off the Dogger Bank, the sky turned the colour of old pewter and the bubbles on the teapot's lid began to slide sideways, all bunched together like children pushing towards a window. Nell watched them lean north-east, the steam from the spout bending the same way, and she set down her ladle.

"Haul the gear," she said up the companionway. "Now, Frank, or we'll be wearing the sea for a hat."

The squall hit twenty minutes later, flat and white, and the boats nearby were still hunting the wind when the Marigold Rose came round and ran for home with her nets dripping on the rail. Nobody argued with the cook after that. When the swell settled, she poured out the first cups in a row along the galley table, and the old pot gave one last cheerful spit from its spout, as if it had been waiting all day to be thanked.
