Jack and Sally in a glass dome on thigh
Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo
A colour tattoo on the outer thigh shows two skeleton characters embracing inside a glass dome, with a black bat perched on the top and a fan of red petals beneath them. The linework is bold and dark, with smooth gradient shading in the pink and purple background, sparkling dots and the yellow gown. The dome is centred on the leg and fills most of the frame, with the surrounding skin and dark fabric at the edges.

Sit closer, the wind off the moat gets into old bones, and mine have been full of it since the roof fell in. You want the bell glass story? Then listen, because I only tell it once a winter.

Up in the north tower there was a glass dome that nobody could lift, though the masons tried for three summers. Under it stood a gown the colour of marigolds, and inside the gown were two dead things who had clearly never been told. The tall one had a face like a lantern, all hollow eyes and grinning teeth, and he kept stooping to the small one, who had stitches running down her throat and hair the red of rosehips. Every night the bat that roosted on the iron cap of the dome unfolded itself and counted the petals that drifted onto the cushion below, and every morning there were fewer.
The steward, a man called Corran Vell who owned nothing but a ledger and a grudge, decided the petals were rent owed. He climbed the tower with a candle and a pair of tongs. He found the hinge and found the glass warm as a hand. Then he heard the small one singing, very softly, about a rooftop in a town where the snow never settled. He sat down on the stair and did not get up until dawn.
When the sun came through the arrow slit, the dome was empty but for one rose petal, and on the sill lay the steward's ledger, open at a page where every debt had been struck through in blue ink. The bat still perches on the tower some nights, counting. Nobody has ever dared ask it the sum.
