Cartoon tornado with cows and a slogan
Traditional · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A cartoon tornado with blue-grey shading and dark outlines spins across the centre of the design, with small black cows with white patches in the clouds and on the ground. Pink and orange clouds frame the tornado, and green grass sits at the base, with the phrase WE GOT COWS in black lettering across the top. The bold outlines and flat colour fills are set against soft shading and sit on a close crop of the arm against grey fabric.

The eastbound freight was late, the key was ticking out nothing of interest, and then a grey funnel began to lower itself from the cloud bank like a stocking dropped off a line. Pink clouds swelled up around its base as if they were trying to get a better look.

Walt Ostrander came running up the platform with his hat in one hand and his braces hanging loose. He said the Hereford herd had been grazing the far side of the siding, and now the herd was not grazing anything. Dell looked out past the water tower and saw them. Black and white shapes were turning slowly in the funnel, spinning up past the clouds like they had somewhere important to be. One of them looked back at him, unbothered, before it vanished into the grey.
Dell sat down at the key. He had a form to fill and the rules were the rules. He wrote WE GOT COWS and pushed it across the counter to the Western Union boy, who read it twice and asked whether it was a code. Dell said it was the only honest thing he had sent all year.
The reply came back before the storm had finished rattling the shutters. HEAD OFFICE REQUIRES PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE STOP. By then the funnel had wandered off east over the wheat, and the cows were coming down one by one in the freight yard, chewing, faintly puzzled, as though somebody had moved their field. Dell stamped the manifest, added one line in pencil, and went out to fetch the gate.
