Bunny and orange rose on a limb

Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo

A grey rabbit head in profile sits above an orange rose with dark outlines and green leaves curving along one side. The rabbit is shaded in soft greys with fine fur strokes, while the rose and leaves use flat colour with bold black outlines. The design is centred on pale skin against a dark, blurred background.

Dear Hetty, the snow has shut the Black Ox road since Tuesday, so forgive the state of this paper. Father says the drifts are over the top of the gate, the carrier from Hexham has not come, and we have eleven guests in the taproom and one rabbit under the stairs.

The rabbit came in with the coal man's boy on Wednesday, wrapped inside his coat, grey as wet slate, with one ear torn at the tip. Mrs Ingram says she is a doe and has been sitting on the mittens we threw down for her. I have started calling her Pell, after the lamplighter, because she looks at everyone the way he did, sideways and unimpressed.

Last night I found the painted rose that Mother put on the tin tray behind the bar, the one she finished the year before she went. Pell had nosed it off the shelf and sat beside it as though she were waiting for it to open. I set a candle down for them both and stayed longer than I meant to, listening to the wind try the shutters one by one.

This morning the lane was scraped to a single track, and the carrier's cart came grinding up the hill. Pell was gone from under the stairs. In her place, pressed flat on the flagstones, lay three green leaves, dry as paper, as if someone had been tidying after a party. Father says the rabbit has gone home, and I have decided not to argue with him. Come in spring and bring the good scissors. Your loving sister, Nan.
