Cartoon woman in an oval frame

Neo-trad · Colour · Photo

A cartoon-style woman with pink hair and blue eyes looks over her shoulder inside an oval cameo frame. The bold dark outlines and smooth colour fills are softened with grey shading in the hair, frame and leaves. Soft pinks, reds, blues and greens sit against a pale teal background, and the ornate frame fills the edges of the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The frame came to me in a cart of firewood, wedged between two split oak logs as if someone had tried to hide it from the weather. Old Mrs Pell at the forest edge had sent her grandson down with it, asking if I could strip the black lacquer and see what was underneath. I had gilder's rouge on my knuckles and a lamp burning on the bench when I first lifted the glass and found a girl looking back at me over her shoulder.

Her hair was the pink of cut rhubarb, her eyes a clean blue, and the leaves curled round the oval as though someone had tried to grow the frame out of the wood itself. I laughed at her at first. Then I noticed the picture was damp at the edges though the glass was dry, and that the grey shading in the leaves seemed to move whenever I did not look straight at it.

I spent three nights on the lacquer. Each morning the girl had turned a little further, her chin tipped towards the window, until on the fourth she faced the door. Mrs Pell's grandson stood there with his cap in his hands, and when he saw the frame he took two steps back into the lane and would not come any nearer.

I wrapped her in brown paper and carried her up the forest path myself that evening. At the old stile, where the trees close in, I set the frame against a stump and turned it towards the village. When I looked again she was gazing down the lane at the lamplit windows, her mouth a little open, as if she had been waiting a long while for someone to take her home.
