I Love Lucy TV and heart on a calf
Traditional · Calf · Mixed · Photo
Two cartoon figures, one with orange hair and a red spotted scarf and one with dark hair and a red neckerchief, stand behind a pink vintage television. A large red heart in the centre of the screen carries the words I Love Lucy in black script. Bold black outlines and flat areas of red, pink and orange fill the design, which is photographed close up on a bare leg against a plain background.

The television arrived on a Tuesday, strapped into the back of a Bedford van, and Maureen made the rental man wipe his boots twice before he carried it past the aspidistra. Its screen was no bigger than a tea tray. Mr Pegg, a thin fellow with a pencil behind each ear, promised it would be the finest set on Albert Street by Christmas, then asked Stan to sign for it in triplicate.

Stan didn't trust it. He liked the wireless, the cricket scores crackling like frying bacon, and he said so every evening while the little grey picture rolled and hissed. But Maureen adored the programme about the couple who were always scheming. She copied their tricks in the kitchen, flour on her cheek, a plan to win the Co-op raffle that involved three neighbours and a borrowed goose. Stan muttered that it was the only time she had ever been late for the potatoes.
One night in October the set went dark in the middle of a sponsor's jingle. Stan fiddled with the knobs, thumped the side, then sat down heavily in the armchair. Maureen came in from the scullery and found him staring at the blank glass. Pinned to the frame was a paper heart she had cut from the back of a cereal packet, coloured red with the last of her lipstick, and written across it in her best hand: Stan, I love you, even when you are rude about the telly.
He read it twice. Then he reached over and turned the dial the wrong way anyway, just to hear her laugh.
