Blonde woman in pink and blue dress on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

The tattoo shows a woman with blonde hair, one hand raised to her head, wearing a pink bodice and a full blue skirt with a glittery texture. She stands in a pair of blue shoes, and pink and blue dotted lines loop around her figure, with small orange dots scattered across the background. The design uses bold colour fills with clean outlines and soft shading on the dress, set against the skin of the leg.

Dear Nell,

The Harrowgate order came back on Tuesday with the bodice let out two inches and a note pinned to the collar that said only "Too tight in the wrong places." I have had the pattern wheel out since six. You know the one, the little brass toothed wheel Mr Pell left me, which rolls a dotted line through the tissue and into the cloth beneath. I have spent three days running dotted lines round a skirt that does not exist yet, looping them up and over the hip the way you taught me, so the mark stays where the eye wants to go.

The blue is a shot taffeta from the Leeds warehouse, the sort that changes colour when you turn it to the window, and I have been fighting it all week. The pink silk for the bodice was the easy part. It sat still on the table as if it knew what it was for. The skirt would not lie flat. Every time I went to pin the hem, the cloth slid off the board and pooled on the floor, and I had to kneel to gather it up again while the orange chalk dust got in my hair.

So I am going to do it differently. I will cut the skirt from the pattern as it is, dots and all, and let the lines show through where the wheel bit. Mrs Harrowgate will think it a mistake. Let her. I will leave a note in the seam saying the lines are a guide for whoever wears it, so she knows where the cloth wants to move.

I found a small blue glass button at the bottom of the tin this morning and sewed it into the hem where the last dotted line runs out. It will not show. It is only for me, the way you used to leave a pin in the lining of every coat you ever made. Write back soon and tell me the gossip from the market. Your loving sister, Ada.
