Cassette tape and two red roses on an upper arm

Realism · Upper arm · Mixed · Photo

A cassette tape with script lettering on its label sits between two large red roses on the upper arm. The cassette is shaded in black and grey with fine highlights on its shell and reels, while the roses are rendered in deep reds and pinks with soft, detailed petal shading. The arm fills most of the frame against a dark top, with a blurred indoor background.

Dear Nell,

The generator has coughed twice since teatime, so I'm writing this in the caravan with the lamp turned low and the cassette recorder warm on the table beside me. Pryce says we'll reach Margate by Saturday if the big wheel doesn't fall off in Ramsgate again. I've stopped believing him, but I haven't stopped believing in you, which is more than I can say for the dodgems.

The tape is finished. Side A has the eleven songs you hummed on the Ferris wheel, every one of them, even the Glen Campbell you pretended not to like. I've written the title on the card in the proper lettering Mum taught me when I was nine, and I pressed two roses from the Whitsun bouquet between the card and the plastic so you'd have something of home when you play it. Side B is the rough stuff: rain on the canvas and Teddy Ogden tuning his accordion for the fourth time.

The deck chewed the tape on the Thursday, so I spooled it back by hand with a biro, slow as a funeral. I nearly threw the lot in the sea. Then I thought about you sitting on that wall by the harbour, waiting for a lad with grease under his nails, and I didn't.

When you play it, listen for the wheel stopping at the end of side B. That's the sound of me getting off at the last stop and walking up the hill to you. Keep the lamp lit till I come.

Yours, Danny
