Castle and quote lettering on a thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo on the outer thigh shows a linework castle with towers, a flag and brick detailing. The quote I could build a castle out of all the bricks they threw at me is set in mixed lettering that overlaps the castle outline. The image is in black ink only, with a plain light background and a floral fabric edge at the top.

Sit down, the lot of you, the kettle's only just gone off and I'm not telling this twice. Coat inside out at the back, stop fidgeting. This is about the winter the lads on Calder Street decided Nell Hardacre was no mason, a girl with a trowel and her dad's old spirit level, and they pelted her with every brick they could lift off the tip.

She never ducked. Each night after the pubs shut she wheeled a barrow down under the railway arches, gathered every brick they'd flung, rinsed the mortar off with a bucket from the canal, and stacked them in the empty plot behind St Hilda's. Nobody asked what she was making. The lamps buzzed orange and the trains went over like thunder that never got to the end of itself.
By March she had walls, then towers, four of them, with a lean-to of ply for a gatehouse and a pillowcase nailed to a broom handle for a flag. The council man came with his clipboard to shift the rubble, took one look at the thing standing in the drizzle and sat down on the kerb. Then the same lads came, hands in pockets, and Danny Peck with his split lip lobbed a brick over the wall out of habit.
Nell caught it one-handed, turned it over, and set it in the top course with her thumb. Cheers, Danny, she said. That one was load-bearing. And the flag was still up come morning, which is more than I can say for the rest of Calder Street.
