Black and grey tattoo of a moonlit mountain, pine trees and a log cabin with a scroll banner, on a lower leg.

Mountain and log cabin scene on a calf

Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows a full moon and clouds above a peaked mountain, with dense pine trees on the slopes and a log cabin with a lit window at the base. A scroll banner curls across the left side, with partly legible lettering that is not clear enough to read. The work uses black ink with grey shading for the trees and mountain, and bold outlines frame the cabin and banner, which fill most of the frame against a plain skin background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Ada had counted the lamps on the ridge road for three winters, and by the first week of December there was only the one left to light. The cabin sat where the pines gave way to scree, a day's walk below the notch in the mountain the older men called the Widow's Shoulder, and every evening she carried oil up the step and trimmed the wick until the window glowed gold against the dark timber.

Her brother Tom had gone over the pass in October with two mules and a promise to be back before the snow closed the notch. The moon that month was full and bright enough to read by, and she had watched it climb the peak each night from the doorway, the clouds drifting under it like wool pulled from a carder. Nobody came up that way in winter except fools and freighters, and Tom was neither, though he had a talent for finding both.

By the third week the snow had come, and the board she had nailed above the door, the one Tom had teased her about, had weathered to a grey smear. She could still make out the curl of the scroll and a few letters, enough to know what it had once told the mountain. She repainted it every spring, and every spring the rain took it back.

On the twenty-second she heard bells on the switchback below. Two mules came out of the mist, one carrying a man bent double over the saddle, and Ada was halfway down the path before she thought to fetch her shawl. Tom looked up at her with lamplight on his face and said the only thing she had ever needed from him: "I saw your window from the notch."
