Castle, bows and roses on a thigh

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

A castle with turrets sits at the top of an ornate oval frame, topped by a pink bow. A larger black bow sits at the bottom of the frame, with roses and scrollwork on the left and right. The linework is crisp and the grey shading is soft, with the pink bow as the only colour accent.

The travelling fair pulls onto Harrowgate Common on the first Thursday of September, and by dusk you have already glued the cracked mirror in the Hall of Wonders and smelled the diesel on everyone's hands. Mr Tolley's knee has gone again, so the big wheel's brake lever is yours tonight, and you hold it the way he taught you, feeling for the slow give before the gondolas stop.

The painted backdrop of the Castle of Glass lives folded in the back of the lorry. Eleven turrets, the paint flaking off the spires like old sugar. Mrs Ferrante, who has run the ghost train since before you were born, wants it hung above the dodgems before the Saturday crowds. You climb the ladder with masking tape in your teeth and a pot of black ink, copying the oval frame she sketched on the back of a betting slip thirty years ago.

At the bottom of the frame she wants a bow big enough to be seen from the top of the wheel. Black, like the ribbon on a mourning hat, though she swears it's for luck. Above it you paint roses that run a little wild at the edges, the way the briar roses grow along the common fence. The pink bow goes at the very top, over the highest turret, because she says every castle needs one thing that doesn't belong.

When the lights come on that night, a small boy presses his nose to the ghost train's rail and asks whether the castle is real. Mrs Ferrante looks at the frame, then at you, and says, only as real as the ribbon. You stay after the crowds go, dabbing the last of the pink paint from your thumb onto the backdrop's corner, one drop nobody else will ever think to look for.
