Cartoon mouse and castle thigh tattoos

Thigh · Mixed · Photo

Two thigh tattoos show a cartoon mouse-like character with round ears and large eyes, with a castle beneath it on the right leg and an ornate ornamental frame around each design. The lines are bold and black with light shading, and a pink bow adds the only colour. The photograph is taken from above, with the legs filling the frame against a wooden deck.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The Palais had been running its Saturday dances since before the war, and by the time Mrs Ottoline Pyke handed me the brush, the gilt round the stage had gone the colour of weak tea. She wanted the back wall done before the spring ball. Nobody had asked a sign painter for a mouse, but she said the children had been scratching one into the bus shelters, and she would rather they drew it on her wall where she could keep an eye on him.

I gave him round black ears, eyes like two wet pennies, and a pink bow tied at his throat. Beneath him I painted a castle with towers like pencil stubs, and I framed the whole business in scrollwork I copied from a Victorian mirror I'd bought off a pawnbroker in Dudley for three shillings. Mrs Pyke said he looked foolish. I said he looked hopeful, which is the trade's polite word for the same thing.

On the Saturday the band struck up a waltz, and a lad from the Co-op crossed the floor to a girl called Irene who had been pretending not to watch him. She refused to dance until he stood beneath the mouse. The bow, she said, made it look as though someone had been expecting her. I never learned whether she said yes, only that they were still under the castle at closing time, and that the caretaker had to put the lights up twice to move them.

Mrs Pyke sold the hall the following spring. The new owners painted over everything except the ears, which they said was bad luck to cover. I went back last year, and the scallops still show through the magnolia above the stage, with the faint pink ghost of a bow below them. Somebody has pinned a paper streamer to it, and it lifts a little every time the door opens.
