Galloping horse line drawing

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a horse in mid-gallop, with its head turned to the left and one foreleg raised. The outline is drawn in a single, mostly uniform black line, with the flowing mane and tail suggested by a few sweeping strokes. The image is plain black linework on white, with the subject centred and filling most of the frame.

Mab Corrigan had not wanted the grey mare, but the circus had sold the bay to a man in Carlisle the week the big top came down for good, and the mare was what was left. Her name was Sorrel, though nobody had called her that since Easter. The ringmaster said she would no longer run a straight line, only a curve, so the last show was given on a trampled field outside Thirsk with the caravans already hitched behind them.

They went round and round inside the ring of lamps. Mab sat on her bare back with no saddle and her hands full of mane, and the mare's breath came out white in the cold. Somewhere past the third turn the mare's head lifted and one foreleg rose as if she were stepping over a fence nobody had built. Mab said afterwards that the crowd stopped breathing. Nobody in that field had ever seen a horse look so pleased with itself.

Then the lamps guttered, the mare dropped her head and walked out through a gap in the hedge, and that was the end of the circus. Some say she ran all the way to the coast. Others say she only stood in the lane until sunrise, waiting for someone to tell her the show was over.
