Minimalist sitting cat line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A stylised cat sits in profile facing left, with its head, ears, closed eye and whiskerless muzzle drawn in a few sweeping strokes. The body is defined by one continuous contour, and the long tail curls round at the bottom left. The design is drawn in solid black on a plain white background with no shading or colour.

The cat came down the gangway at Hythe the morning the Marigold was sold, and nobody on the towpath could say whose she was. Dora Quill, who had kept the lock books for thirty years, watched her step off the last plank without looking at the water, sit down on the stones and wrap that long grey tail round her feet as neatly as a bootlace. She did not beg. She simply waited, face turned towards the boats going up the cut, as though she had been left in charge of them.

The new owner, a surveyor called Haddon who had never kept anything alive, wanted her gone by noon. Dora said she would take the cat up to the lock cottage for the night, and nobody argued, because nobody argued with the lock keeper. The cat ate a saucer of tinned mackerel, slept on the windowsill with her eyes shut, and in the morning was sitting exactly where she had been the day before, facing the other way.
Haddon found the Marigold's papers in a biscuit tin under the bunk, and in them a letter from a Mrs Ada Pell asking that the boat be kept at Hythe until her cat came home from the coal wharf. The date on it was 1931. Dora read it twice, then folded it small and put it in her apron pocket. When the cat stood up at dusk and walked back down to the water, she did not follow. She only lifted the latch and left the door open a little, the way you would for someone who had always known the way back.
