A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The last tent of Pike's Travelling Wonders stood on the salt flats outside Dunmore the spring the lions were sold, and the only act left that still drew a crowd was the black cat that sat on the ticket table and would not be shifted. Its name was Quaver. Ansel Pike had found it asleep in a rolled canvas and said it had the look of a thing that knew where it was going, though he never did know where that was.

When Quaver lifted its head and turned its ears toward the rafters, the whole tent went still, because it was said the cat could pull a note out of the air. Children hummed along. Old men took off their caps. Imogen Pike, who was nine and sharp with figures, counted the pennies into a biscuit tin and told her father the takings had halved since winter. He told her the cat was worth more than the lions had ever been.

A man in a grey coat came on the third evening with a leather purse and an offer. Imogen watched Quaver climb the centre pole, coil its tail round the top, and lift its chin. The note that came down was low and long, and the salt flats outside seemed to lean toward it. The man closed his purse without a word and walked off across the sand.

The tent came down the week after. Quaver walked down the pole, crossed the sawdust and left one curved mark in the dust by the door, like a clef drawn with a finger. Imogen kept the biscuit tin, and every spring she hums that mark's shape across the flats, and the cat, somewhere, answers.
