Cat sitting in a treble clef

Black and grey · Flash

A stylised black cat is formed from a treble clef, with pointed ears at the top and a long, thin tail curling out to the left. The bold clef strokes make up the body while the tail is drawn in a finer line, giving a contrast in weight. The design is shown in solid black on a plain light grey background with no body part visible.

Tuesday, 14 March. The piano on Platform Two is out of tune again, which Mr Okafor from the buffet says is the only honest thing about this station. I came to tune it at half six because the first train was late and the platform was empty except for a grey cat sitting on the lid as if she had bought a ticket for it.

She did not move when I lifted the lid. She watched my tuning fork the way a conductor watches a first violin, her tail curled round her front feet in a long loose question mark that ran off the edge of the bench. I told her she could not stay on the keys. She climbed down onto the stool and sat, very upright, and I swear the stool gave a creak like the opening bar of something.

By eight the platform had filled. A woman with a pram stopped beside us and hummed the tune I was half playing, a slow thing from a film nobody remembers. The cat stood, stretched her spine into a perfect S, and walked along the edge of the platform to the bench where the woman sat, then back again, as if she were marking the bars.

The 8.14 pulled in and she was gone before the doors opened. I found her at the far end, sitting beside the sign that says Mind the Gap, her tail tucked round her like a clef pinned to a page. I have decided she is the station's new tuning master. Mr Okafor says I am tired. Perhaps. The piano sounds better, though, and nobody has asked me to tune it since.
