The cat had been sitting on the lamppost outside the chip shop since Tuesday, and Marisol had started to think it was waiting for her specifically. Every night she walked the long way home past the canal, past the shuttered launderette, and every night the cat was there, black as a burnt match, its tail curling down the iron post like a question mark somebody had forgotten to finish.

On the Friday, the moon was no more than a paring over the gasworks. Marisol stopped and said, to nobody in particular, that she was tired of being followed by things that did not have the decency to be dogs. The cat blinked. Then it dropped to the pavement and walked ahead of her, not hurrying, stopping at each lit doorway to look back until she caught up.

It led her down Pell Street, through the gap by the bookmaker's, into a yard she had never noticed in nine years of living above the bakery. Dust hung in the air where the security light caught it, drifting like a spill of tiny stars, and the cat sat down in the middle of it all and waited.

Marisol knelt beside it. Under a sheet of corrugated iron lay a pocket watch, its glass cracked, its hands stopped at a quarter past midnight. She picked it up, and the dust settled over her fingers. When she looked up, the cat had gone, and the moon above the gasworks was a fraction fuller than it had been a minute before.
