Cat heart and paw prints on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A small black tattoo on the back of a hand shows a cat's head outlined in a heart shape, with two paw prints beside it. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is a dark, single tone. The hand fills the lower right of the frame against a busy floral fabric and a textured bag.

Nobody in Hollin Bank could agree on the colour of the cat, only that she was never fed in the pit yard and always came up the shaft ladder ahead of the men. The overman called her Sooty, the widows called her the Lamp, and the lads just said she knew the air.

Her habit was to sit on the lip of the cage gate at the start of each shift and wait, tail wrapped round her feet, until the last man had checked his tally. Then she would walk down the main road ahead of the deputies, stopping at each junction to look back, her paws lifting and settling in the coal dust as if she were writing something down for the men who came after.
On a wet Tuesday in the autumn of the strike year she sat at the Number Four junction for longer than usual. Tom Ridley, who was new and too proud to turn back, laughed at her and went on with his lamp. The deputy who followed him said afterwards he heard the roof talking before he saw the first crack, a low sound like someone turning over in bed. He got the men out by the cross-drift. Ridley came up with the rest, grey as ash, and said nothing for a week.
After that the lads cleared a patch of dust at that junction every Tuesday and left it smooth, and each morning there were small prints across it, going out and coming back, a heart of footsteps around the place where she had sat. Nobody ever swept it again.
