Cat curled around a heart on the neck
Fine line · Neck · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of a cat curled around a heart sits on the side of the neck, partly under the edge of the hair. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the cat has a closed eye and whiskers. The photograph is taken from behind with warm, soft light on pale skin.

The lift in Ashgrove House had been broken since Tuesday, so Mrs Okafor's shopping went up the stairs one carrier bag at a time, and it was on the ninth-floor landing that Dev found the cat. It was a thin grey thing, asleep in a tight curl on the draught excluder someone had left beside the bin chute. Nobody on the estate would own up to it.

He knocked on doors. Mrs Okafor said the cat belonged to the Joneses over the car park, and Mr Jones said it belonged to Mrs Okafor, because she slipped it sardines through her letterbox every evening. By Friday the cat had moved into Dev's flat without asking, wedged itself along the back of the radiator in the spare room, and would not be shifted by any amount of coaxing.
His nan used to say a cat curled like that was keeping something warm that would otherwise go cold. So he left the heating on low and pinned a note to the noticeboard by the post boxes: found, one cat, very sleepy, ask for Dev, flat 47. Nobody came. On Sunday the radiator was empty, the dish was licked clean, and the door to the spare room stood open on a cold patch of carpet.
He found the cat on the landing again the following week, curled on the draught excluder beside the bin chute as if it had never left. Dev sat down on the top step beside it and waited for the lift to come back on, which it did not do for another month, and the cat let him stay.
