Black fine line tattoo of an outlined heart formed by an arrow, placed on the inner wrist.

Arrow heart on inner wrist

Fine line · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A single black outline of a heart, with an arrow whose shaft forms the curve of the heart and whose fletching sits on the left and arrowhead on the lower right. The linework is even and clean, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on pale skin. The tattoo is centred on a close-up of the inner wrist against a plain white background.

The bread had risen too fast in the heat of the galley, and Maggie Tully was already swearing at it when Ollie came down the companionway with the mail sack over one shoulder. Nothing for the cook, he said, grinning. Nothing but a parcel for the Second that smelled of someone's mum's fruitcake.

Maggie pressed the dough back down with the heel of her hand and did not look up. Three weeks earlier she had posted a letter to a flat in Hull, the envelope scrawled with a drawing she had made while the pan boiled: a heart with an arrow running through its curve, the shaft bending round to make the shape, the way her brother used to draw things on the backs of school jotters. He had always said she could never draw a heart without some sharp thing to finish it off. She had told him hearts were no use on their own.

The reply came in the last bag before the boat turned for the harbour, a single sheet folded in three. Her brother had written only four lines and a postscript about the weather in Hull. The fourth line said, in his cramped capitals, STILL LOADED. STILL AIMED. Maggie laughed so suddenly that Ollie looked back from the hatch.

She pinned the sheet to the bulkhead beside the rota and the cooker timer, then tore off a strip of masking tape for each corner. The dough, forgotten again, rose over the rim of the tin and sat there, pleased with itself.
