Small outline heart on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small heart drawn as a single thin black outline sits on the inner wrist, with the forearm running diagonally across the frame. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading or fill inside the heart. The pale skin and dark background give the tattoo strong contrast, and the heart is placed near the centre of the composition.

Mara had been up since two, and the ovens on Hollin Street were already breathing heat when old Tobias came in from the cold with frost on his cap. The rye was sticking again, he said. Mara told him rye always stuck, that was what it was for.

Every morning before the first light, the baker Sefton Crane cut one loaf differently. He drew the point of a bread knife around the top in the shape of a heart, a single thin ring, nothing filled in, so the crust rose up on either side of the line and left it open. The village said the loaf was for whoever came to the back door with empty pockets. Customers left coins on the sill and took the heart loaf without asking. Mara once asked why an outline and not a full heart. Sefton said a filled heart was only a loaf pinched shut, but an outlined one kept the door open.
The winter the flour ran short, the sill stayed bare for a week. Mara cut the hearts anyway, her fingers numb on the cold knife, and at dawn she found a lamp burning on the back step and a boy asleep against the door, his boots split at the toes. She woke him and gave him the loaf. He broke it along the crease and the outline separated clean, and he handed her the half with the thinner edge without a word, as if he had been taught that too.
By spring the sill had a tin again, and the rule had changed. Nobody paid for the heart any more. Mara still draws the line each morning before the ovens are lit, and she still leaves the middle empty.
