Cat curled around a heart on a shoulder

Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo

A single cat outline wraps around the top of a heart, with its head resting at the upper edge and closed eyes drawn as small strokes. The thin, even black linework is unshaded, and the tattoo sits alone against plain skin with soft natural light falling across the shoulder.

The rain had been coming in sideways since seven, so the awning over my stall sagged like a wet hat and the brass kitchen scales were beaded with it. Nobody wants scales on a Saturday in February, but I sold them anyway, mostly to men who wanted to weigh their own tea. The cat came in under the tarpaulin at half past eight, shook itself over a box of bent teaspoons, and climbed onto my cash tin as if it had paid rent.

It had no name that anyone agreed on. Mrs Okafor on the flower stall called it Duchess because it sat like one. The lad from the fish van called it Gravy. I called it nothing, because I didn't want to become the sort of woman who names a stray and then can't put it out in the wet. It curled itself into a tight loop with its tail tucked round its nose and kept its eyes shut the whole time I haggled, as though the market were a radio it had decided not to hear.

On the Friday it didn't come. I walked the length of the hall twice, past the vinyl crates and the bicycle bells, and found it at last under the fish van, curled round a dropped glove and looking put out to have been found. I carried it back under my coat and it complained the whole way, which I took as a good sign.

On Monday I set out the old cash tin, the one with a dented heart pressed into the lid, and propped the lid open. The cat came in dripping, sniffed the rim, and settled into the curve of the tin as neatly as a clasp. It shut its eyes. I went back to counting change, very quietly, so as not to wake it.
