Black and grey cat portrait with scrollwork on calf
Realism · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A realistic cat in profile looks to the left, with its whiskers extending outward and its ears upright. The cat is rendered with soft shading and fine detail in the fur, fading into smoke-like grey wash behind it. Below the cat, stylised scrollwork swirls in black and grey contrast against the pale skin, with a red background behind the leg.

Mrs Dunnet came aboard the Harriet Gale in a fish box at Scrabster, and by the first night out she had decided the galley was hers. I cooked for eleven men on a boat that rarely saw the shore for more than a fortnight, and the stove was the only warm thing aboard, so she sat on the locker beside it and watched me work with the calm of a magistrate.

She had a way of turning her head when the boat dipped, ears up, as if the sea had said something rude. The smoke from the coal range curled up past her and she would follow it with her eyes, never blinking, until it thinned into the dark above the hatch. Skipper Rennie said she was reading the weather. I said she was reading the menu.
The winter we lost the Ardent off Sule Skerry, she sat on the locker for three days and would not eat. On the fourth morning she got up, walked the length of the deck to the bow rail, and sat facing west, where the spray came off the crests in long curls like the ends of a fiddle scroll. The men went quiet. Rennie took off his cap and said nothing.
We came home with a full hold and a short crew. I still cook on the Harriet Gale. When the wind backs round to the south-west, I find I'm peeling potatoes with one eye on the rail, waiting for her to turn her head.
