In the years after the water came over the causeway, the people of Hollin Reach kept two dogs at the ferry steps. The first was Marrow, a heavy grey dog with a black mask and a jaw like a shut gate, who would not let a stranger onto the landing until they had said the password twice. The second was Tansy, a lean husky with a pale face split by a dark stripe, who knew the tides the way other folk knew their debts.

One winter the lamp on the Skerry went dark, and the ferrymaster's boy rowed out in the fog to carry oil to it. The tide turned under him. Nobody could see the skiff from the steps, so Tansy went into the black water with a rope in her teeth, swimming the way her grandmothers had swum in the old country, which was to say without fear and without much sense. Marrow stayed on the stones and barked, one hard note after another, so the boy in the fog would know which way was home.

Tansy reached the skiff, but the rope caught on the oarlock and pulled her under. Marrow did not go in. He went as far as the last slick stone, braced his feet, and hauled on the line with his whole grey weight until the rope sang and the two of them came up out of the water together, the boy coughing, the dog shaking, both of them alive.

The ferrymaster painted a pair of heads on the bow of the boat that spring. The grey one faces the shore, and the pale one faces the open sea, which is where Tansy always wanted to look.
