Sunflower outline on a forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black outline tattoo of a sunflower sits on the upper inner forearm, showing the petals as spiky lines around a seeded centre with light hatching. The ink is solid black with no shading or colour, and the design is small and centred on the arm. The plain pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo and the hand, which has gold-toned nail polish.

Mr Pell measured the sunflowers against the chapel wall every August, and every August the stalks beat the mark by a hand's width. My father had grown them the same way, in rows beside the railway cutting, so the trains would flick past a wall of gold. This year the heads were heavy enough to bow, and I went down each morning with a pencil behind my ear to count what he had always counted.

The seeds sat in a spiral inside each disc, clockwise one way and anticlockwise the other, thirty-four and fifty-five and eighty-nine if you were patient with the rows. Father said the pattern was the flower's own arithmetic and it never needed a schoolmaster to check it. I drew the largest head on the back of the seed ledger in hard black lines, petals like struck matches, the centre hatched so the seeds would show even from the lane. Mr Pell said it looked like a cartwheel that had lost its nerve.
In September a telegram came from Carlisle for my brother, asking whether the Harvest Trust still wanted a sample for the county show. I told the boy at the post office to say yes. Then I cut the biggest head, rubbed the seeds into a paper twist, and wrote a name on the outside that I had not said aloud in three years. Father would have said the seeds were the only honest letter in the village. I tucked it in my coat and walked the long way past the railway, where the sunflowers were still turning to follow the sun.
