Dreamcatcher and birds on a wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a hand with the fingers curled, showing a small dreamcatcher tattoo on the inner wrist. The dreamcatcher has a circular hoop with a radiating web pattern, and feathery strands hang below it, with three small birds in flight to its upper left. The linework is thin and black, with light shading in the web and feathers, and the soft, pale background keeps the focus on the tattoo.

The nets came in wet on the Tuesday tide, tangled again where the young lad had dragged them over the slipway stones, so you sat on an upturned crab pot with a bodkin and a hank of tarred twine and set to work. Your grandmother used to say a torn mesh tells a story badly, and that you mend it so nothing slips through that ought to stay put.

The wind had backed north and the gulls were crowding the breakwater. Old Tam Rennie, who had sailed out of Porthgwidden for forty years before his knees gave up, came up the slip with his stick and stood watching your hands. He said his mother used to hang a hoop over the cot to catch the night's bad dreams in the web, and let the good ones drift through the middle to the sleeper's ear. You told him the sea had no use for such things. He didn't laugh.
He asked you to make one for his daughter, who had gone to Halifax at nineteen and never once written. So you cut a ring from driftwood, wound it round with twine, and spun the web the way you would for a cod net, eight spokes and then the rings inside them, tighter at the centre. From the quay you gathered three gulls' feathers and tied them to the lower ends, and you left a gap in the top where something small could fly through.
When the last boat cleared the harbour mouth, Tam was gone and the ring lay drying on the pot. Three birds lifted off the wall, wheeled once over the water, and cut a line straight through the open gap in the web. You sat a while longer, wondering which of them had been dreaming of home.
