Cat in a teacup with Tea for Two lettering
Traditional · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a cartoon-style cat with a red heart above its head, peering over the rim of a teacup decorated with a floral mandala-like pattern and a curled handle. The words Tea for Two sit beneath the cup in bold, serif-style lettering, and a second view reads Two for Tea. The four panels show the piece from different distances and angles, with shading and bold outlines in black and grey, and the red heart as the only colour.

In the hard week after the thaw failed, Mabel Crane set two cups on the kitchen table because her hands had always done it that way, and then she sat looking at the second one until the tea went cold. The farm had gone quiet since Tom was buried under the big ash tree. The hens were laying poorly and the snow sat in blue drifts against the byre door.

On the third night a grey cat came in through the coal hatch, shaking frost from its ears, and sat down on the cold flags as if it had been expected. Mabel didn't shoo it. She fetched the good saucer with the gold rim, poured a splash of milk, and the cat watched her with eyes like two pale coins. Then it climbed onto the chair across from her and settled its paws under its chest, very upright, the way Tom used to sit when he was waiting for his supper to be served.
They kept company that way until the fire was embers. The cat slept, the clock ticked, and Mabel talked about the price of feed and the pig that had gone through the fence. Near dawn she noticed a small red heart had appeared above the cat's head, like a spark caught in the fur. She did not ask where it came from. Folk on the valley road said the cat came each winter to whoever had lost a partner, and only to them.
Come spring, Mabel bought a second chair with the egg money. She never drank from the second cup again, but she kept it full.
