Cat in glasses on a stack of books

Neo-trad · Other · Colour · Photo

A cartoon grey cat with large green eyes and round glasses sits on a stack of orange, yellow and red books. Two yellow-green starburst shapes and a third on the left sit around the cat, with a teal wash behind its head. Bold black outlines define the cat, books and starbursts, with soft shading on the fur and the book spines, and the tattoo is centred on a close-up of skin.

The returns trolley at Harrowby Lending Library had been stacked higher than the sign-in desk by the time Nadia unlocked the door on Monday, and on the summit of it, between a damp sermon collection and a field guide to moths, sat Tibbs in a pair of round wire spectacles, looking as though he had read every word.

The spectacles had belonged to Mr Ambrose Pilling, who ran the library for thirty-one years and died in March, leaving them folded beside a half-finished crossword on the counter. Nobody had the heart to put them in the lost property tin. Tibbs had simply collected them, the way he collected everything of Mr Pilling's, and he wore them now with such quiet authority that the county inspector, who came on Tuesdays with a clipboard, had never once thought to ask where they came from.

Nadia found the slips in the night box on Wednesday. Every overdue card had been stamped with a return date in a neat, slanting hand, and the dates ran on for years, a tidy little calendar of forgiveness. Beneath the bottom card was a note in a hand she knew from thirty years of crossword clues: KEEP THE LIGHTS ON FOR THE READERS.

She climbed the stepladder beneath the three starburst lamps that Mr Pilling had hung in 1958 and never let anyone replace. Tibbs watched her over the rims of his glasses, green as the lamps, and did not move. She set the rubber stamp down beside him, gently, and went to find the kettle.
