Cat on lotus flowers on a thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Colour · Photo
A long-haired grey and black cat with large green eyes and a small blue teardrop on its forehead sits on top of pink lotus flowers. A pale blue scalloped halo surrounds the cat's head. The shading is smooth and soft on the fur and petals, with bright highlights on the eyes and flowers, and the pink and blue colours dominate against the skin.

The novices had been waiting three mornings for the cat to leave the lotus pond, and by the third they had stopped pretending to be patient. Mother Hatsune brought her tea out on the veranda anyway, as she always did, and watched the grey cat sit on the widest pink bloom as though the gods had placed it there for her benefit. Its fur was long and untidy from a winter of sleeping in the bell tower. A single blue bead, a drop of paint from the shrine's restoration, had stuck to its forehead and never come off.

"It is not holy," said Kenji, who had carried the rice sacks up the hill that spring and had opinions about everything. "It is only heavy."
Hatsune said nothing. She had seen the cat cross the pond on a fallen branch and come back dry. She had also seen its green eyes turn gold in the lamplight, the way the petals did when the sun dropped behind the ridge, and she had decided long ago that a creature which could do both was not hers to move.
On the fourth morning the cat stood, stretched, and stepped onto the water. It did not sink. The blue bead caught the light, and for a moment the whole pond seemed to hum. Kenji dropped his broom. Hatsune finished her tea.
The cat walked to the far bank, shook itself once, and sat down on a stone as if it had always been there. Then it turned and looked back across the water at the veranda, slowly, with an expression Hatsune could only describe as patience. She set down her cup and went to fetch the bowl of fish heads she had been saving.
