Sketched owl on a branch
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A cartoon owl with large round eyes and tufted ears sits on a short branch. The linework is loose and scratchy, with soft hatched shading on the body and wings. The piece is done only in black and grey ink and sits centred on the forearm against plain pale skin.

Sit down, the lot of you, and leave that biscuit tin alone, it is not a drum. Right. You know the owl on the branch by the bins? No, not a real one, the real one came later. Winter of the big power cut, when the lifts stopped and Ashcroft House went dark from the bottom up, there was a bird on the balcony rail of flat fourteen with eyes like two dinner plates, and it looked at me as if I was the one who'd got lost.

Mr Dunmore on the ninth floor had a torch with no batteries and a branch he'd dragged up eleven flights from the dead plane tree in the car park, meaning to hang his washing from it. He propped it on the rail for the owl, bless him, and the owl settled there as if it had been booked. Every evening the children carried crusts up the stairwell, counting the steps out loud, and every evening that owl tilted its head like a schoolteacher who had heard a very poor answer and was too kind to say so.
The lifts came back on the first Monday of February. The bird was still there, puffed up against the wind, all scratched feathers and nerves. Dunmore carried the branch back down and put it under the plane tree where it belonged, and the owl stared at the empty rail for a good long while before it flew off over the estate.
I still leave the window open a crack on cold nights. Nobody has ever come back to it, but I like to think he knows where the biscuits are, and that he is too polite to take them without asking.
