Brother Anselm has already barred the scriptorium door by the time you ease the cat through the gap beneath it, and you stand there with a candle guttering in your fist, listening to the Compline bells fade over the wet fields. She does not look at you. She goes straight to the lectern, where the Psalter lies open at the feast of Saint Brendan, and settles on the vellum as if the abbot himself had appointed her.

You were sent for her because the mice have got into the gatherings three winters running, and Brother Anselm has taken to speaking of the Lord's patience in a tone that means otherwise. Now she watches something move along the skirting. Her pupils swell into black wells, and the dusk in the high window slants across the room in purple planes, cutting the stone angles so they no longer agree with one another, like the glass in the north transept when the sun is going.

You reach for the pumice and the gold leaf you have been hiding from the cellarer, and she turns her head towards the window and then back to you, unimpressed. Whatever lives in the corner has no interest in the psalm. You work until the candle is a stub, and she does not move once, not even when the bell for Lauds begins.

At first light you find the page untouched and the gold leaf laid out in neat squares. Beside the Psalter, on the cold flags, sits a small grey tail, placed with care, as if she had wanted you to understand exactly what the arrangement was.
