Faceted black cat portrait tattoo
Geometric · Other · Mixed · Photo
A stylised black cat face sits at the centre, built from angular, faceted planes of dark blue-grey shading with a pale highlight across the forehead. The gold-yellow eyes have dark pupils and small highlights, and the whiskers are picked out in light grey. Partial grey tattoos of stars on a banner and a second design appear at the top and bottom left, and the cat fills most of the frame against plain skin.

Old Mrs Tilly had a black cat called Soot who would not come indoors until the stars were out, and she never asked him why. He sat on the wall at the bottom of the kitchen garden, where the cabbages gave way to the rhubarb, and watched the sky the way other people watch a kettle.

One February the frost came early and took the stars with it. Cloud lay flat over the village for nine nights, and the garden went as dark as a cellar. The hens stopped laying. The well water tasted of iron. Soot sat on the wall each evening looking up at nothing, and his eyes, which had always been the colour of brass lamps, grew dull as pennies left in a drawer.
On the tenth night Mrs Tilly went down with a lantern and found him not on the wall but beside the old sundial, pawing at a shard of blue glass the gardener had buried years before. He had dug it up himself. It was cut into angles like a broken star, and when she held it to the lantern the light split into a hundred small skies.
She carried it up to the house and set it on the windowsill. By morning the cloud had gone, the stars came back one by one, and Soot leapt up beside the glass, pleased with himself, his eyes bright as they had ever been.
