Cat portrait with banner on thigh
Neo-trad · Thigh · Mixed · Photo
A tabby cat's head is shown in a realistic portrait style, with green-eyed gaze, shaded fur and a pink nose. Pink flowers and green leaves frame the cat, and a grey banner with the word BANDIT sits beneath it. Bold black outlines, vivid greens and pinks, and soft grey shading make up the colour work, all placed on the outer thigh.

The brothers of Saint Aldric had argued for a whole winter about whether the grey tabby that came up the bell-tower steps was a blessing or a thief. Brother Osric said a thief, because it took the herring from the refectory. Brother Wendel said a blessing, because the mice had gone from the scriptorium, and a mouse in a psalter is a sin nobody confesses.

The cat did not care for either view. It had green eyes the colour of pond weed in the millrace, and it sat on the lectern in the afternoons, watching the ink dry. When the abbot ordered it put out in the snow, the lay sister Hild carried it to the orchard wall instead and told it to go and bother the wood pigeons. It came back by evening, as it always did, and sat on the cold hearth with its tail curled round its feet as if it had been there since the first stone was laid.
When the Michaelmas fire took the south range, the monks carried out the books in armfuls, cursing and praying in equal measure. Hild went back for the last box and found the smoke so thick she could not see her hands. Something warm pressed against her ankle and led her by the hem of her habit along the wall, low, where the air was clear, out through the door that had been left open to the frost.
Afterwards the brothers painted the cat on the gate lintel, and they wrote its name beneath it on a scroll, because a thing that saves your library should at least have a name. Osric still says it was luck. Wendel still says it was a blessing. The cat, asleep on the warm stones of the gatehouse, has never bothered to say which.
