Cat head and anatomical heart on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A cat's head, with tufted ears and a spotted muzzle, is rendered in fine hatched and sketchy linework, partly broken up by a field of geometric triangles. A dotwork anatomical heart sits below the cat's face at the lower left of the design. The tattoo is shown in black and grey ink on pale skin, with the arm running diagonally across the frame against a dark background.

Nobody in Ashgrove House could agree on whose cat it was. The grey tom with the tufted ears came and went through the bin chute on the ninth floor, and when Mrs Okonedo left him sardines on the landing, he ate them staring past her shoulder at the stairwell window, where the cracked panes threw triangles of light across the concrete like a dropped kaleidoscope. You noticed him properly on the night the lift stalled between seven and eight, when the emergency light buzzed and the whole block seemed to hold its breath.

He was sitting on the inspection hatch when you pried the doors apart. Cats in tower blocks learn which walls carry heat and which carry gossip, and this one had the look of someone who had been waiting for you specifically. He did not run. He looked at the spare key to flat 14 in your pocket, the one you had been meaning to return since Mr Adeyemi left for Lisbon, and then he looked at the heavy steel box above the door, the one nobody had opened since the building was new.

You had the key turned in the lock before you thought better of it. Inside lay the old maintenance log, its pages swollen with damp, and a brass heart-shaped weight that the first engineers had used to balance the cable drum. Something in the dark hummed like a fridge. The cat walked over the open page and sat down on a date written in faded blue ink, the same day the building had first been lit.

When the lift jerked back into life, the doors opened on the ground floor to a cold, clean night. The cat was already gone, but in the dust on the lift floor there was a small print, pointing upward, toward the roof.
