A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the first week of August the wasps had claimed the windfalls, and Hattie Coyle gave up trying to keep the crates clear. She sat on the orchard wall with a flask of cold tea and watched the grey cat pick its way along the rows, stopping at every fallen fruit as though checking each one for bruises.

The cat had come with the cottage. Nobody claimed it, and the last tenant had left a saucer by the back door and a notebook of pencilled sketches on the windowsill: a cat built from lozenges, scrolls like unrolled ferns, rows of dots like seed heads. Hattie found the notebook in a drawer and laughed, then stopped laughing when the cat appeared that evening and sat squarely on the open page as if it owned it.

She told herself the lines on its flanks were only pattern, the way bark has pattern. But the cat would not stay ordinary. Each dusk it walked the perimeter wall and came back with a new mark: a diamond on its shoulder, a dot pressed into its haunch, a curl of tail that had not been there the day before.

On the last night of the month a storm split the old pear by the gate. Hattie found the cat sitting in the broken trunk, upright and unbothered, its tail wrapped neatly around its paws, its face turned towards her as if asking whether she had brought the lamp. In the torchlight the bare patches of its coat gleamed pale as peeled wood. She fetched the notebook and drew one more sketch beneath the rest, a split pear with a cat sitting in it, and then she sat down in the wet grass and let the night go where the cat wanted.
